OK, totally had a friend drop in from out of town and totally mess with my weekend - so here's your battle. Sorry to keep you waiting.

Quote:
-Battles are fought in turns, you post after a response.
-Fighting happens in "real time"; meaning you can, if you wish, go back in time a little to describe actions and things you do before any attack the opposition lands (within reasonability).
-Be as descriptive as you can. More information makes for better battles.
-Do not ever control your opponent's character (or pets) in any way.
-Characters are, typically, allowed two actions per post: One defensive action and one offensive action. Regardless of whether you were attacked or not, you may only attack once per post.
-You can only use 1 special/spell per turn (you can use multiple skills per turn, but only 1 special per turn). Specials that have an effect on your opponent count as your one offensive action.
-Try to be fair in both your attacks as well as your dodges. Getting hit every now and then is not the end of the world, and deepens your character. (And makes battles more interesting)
-A minimum of 2 paragraphs (though more are desirable!)
-No "unblockable" attacks. There's always something, somewhere that can happen.
-Be creative, use the world around you to your advantage.
-Use a spell checker, or a program that helps with punctuation. It can't hurt...and can generally help your posts become more readable. Reading your post before you submit it can take care of accidental misspellings as well.
-Have fun! Battles are supposed to be enjoyable. If you don't like it, something is wrong.

It was a rather unusual item, but rather deceptive in its simplicity. When used properly, it has the ability to keep food from spoiling, cause protests and riots and bring children together for a game that would keep them together for hours on end.

However, all that makes sense in another time and place.

In Darkness Incarnate, the humble can has yet to exist. So, when the forces that mold and shape this world found it fitting to introduce something from the future, well...that's what we're about to find out.

It literally fell from the sky. Ask any mage what would have likely happened that day to cause this to come about, they'd give you some sort of convoluted explanation that involves a large amount of hand waving, the word "mana" and some gobbleydegook about "rifts". Ask any priest and they'd say the gods sent it.

Lok'tar...well he's just glad he didn't get hit.

The can came blazing out of the sky as he was walking down the road between two grazing fields. The cows that would have normally inhabited these lands seemed to have been moved on, so all that remained was grass, the usual "contributions" left behind by cows and all the uninterrupted blue sky you could see for miles around. You can only imagine how startled the orc would have been when the can landed on the road beside him, making a foot-wide depression in the road with the smoking metal object embedded in the ground at its center.

After loosing a terrible roar at it in equal parts defiance and annoyance, the orc bent down to get a better look. Aside from the smouldering exterior, he noticed a small key-shaped piece of metal attached to the top of it and three letters (the fourth being stuck under the surface of the ground)...

(Sorry about the late reply, it's been a rough week here)

It was a lovely day. Lovely – a term Valithys did rarely used regarding things other than power and magic. The sky was a deep, pure blue, uninhibited by the usually plentiful fluffy balls of cloud drifting along at a lazy pace. The trees lining the far reaches of the empty field to his right stood resolutely, but their outstretched arms seemed oddly comforting. The fields themselves were laced with a golden air of frivolity; the blades themselves swayed carelessly in the gently breeze.

A particularly strong gust unsettled the faraway trees, bringing with it the whispers of a thousand leafy voices, but also carrying the interesting scent of manure from the fields. He reached upwards to shield his nose, and in that fleeting instant of unawareness, a loud THUD assaulted his ears, followed by a thunderous roar akin to the sound of some massive beast suffering a fatal blow.

What the hell was that? Probably a spell gone awry. I’ll be damned if I get myself wrapped up in another mage’s fancies; I’ve got my own experiments to worry about.

Despite his reserve, he mounted the hill by cause of curiosity alone, only to discover a large orc bending over what appeared to be a sizeable crater in the path. The glint of metal caught his eye, and he instinctively reached for the dagger by his waist. Soon realizing that the source was not a weapon but rather some sort of unidentifiable cylindrical object embedded in the earth, Valithys relaxed his grip, but not so much as to leave himself completely vulnerable. Knowing of course that orcs weren’t the sharpest mages in the tower, he took a step forward in elevated confidence, determined to discover the source of the sound.

“What sort of magic is this, orc? And what the hell is that?”

(The only thing to mention is that, in general, italics are reserved for thoughts, not direct dialogue. Otherwise, it's a good start. Let's continue.)

The orc continued to look at the metal object. As he pondered what the heck that it might be, a new smell began to assault his senses. It was the smell of food. Specifically, the smell of something that may or may not have been meat. It was a peculiar scent that was hard to identify properly, but he had to figure out what the metal object was about and, more specifically, if those squiggly lines on the side would tell him anything about what it was for. Unfortunately, he didn't have any idea of how to go about figuring it out. He needed some help. A magic user or merchant or anyone with some book-learning would be helpful right now, but he was in the middle of the road in the middle of nowhere. Where would he be able to find someone to help him out? He didn't want to leave the strange object here - he might not be able to find it again.

He looked up, completely puzzled as to how to solve this predicament...

“What sort of magic is this, orc? And what the hell is that?”

Apparently, if he had turned around, he would have saved himself from all that painful thinking...

Maybe.

It was just a stunty. But not one of the stunties who could fight, what with all their armor and pointy things and hammers. The short-men were good fighters. Tough too. This was just one of the stunties who thought they was orcs. Who tried to make their life better by beating up on orcs and being tricksy. He'd have to be really careful about what this stunty said. He was wearing a robe, so maybe he knew something about magics...there was only one way to find out.

He decided that he'd play this one cool.

Whadda you know about magics, stunty? You think that because you gotta robe, you can make things on fire? Pshhht...

Yup, straight cool. That stunty would have absolutely no idea what to say...

The orc turned, revealing his ugly, bald head. His face was contorted, as if caught deep in some faraway realm of thought. Such degrees of thought in the orc surely corresponded to nothing more than the identification of a blade of grass, but even so, the object he was studying appeared to be of enough complexity to warrant some serious pondering. Slowly, the orc’s mouth began to form words:

“Whadda you know about magics, stunty? You think that because you gotta robe, you can make things on fire? Pshhht...”

Valithys was taken aback – was this orc not a mage?

Drawing his dagger, he shifted weight to his toes, readying himself for anything.

“I’ll have no tricks from you! Tell me where you got this… device.”

Apparently, the stunty didn't really understand the meaning of his words. After all, they were an invitation to friendly - um, wait...nope, the stunty understood his words perfectly. Having understood his words, the stunty went and grabbed his knife. That knife was so cute! It was like something that the little grots would play with when they were growing up. Except for the fact that they played with sticks pointed like that and not real pokie things at all. Either way, it was really cute how this stunty thought that he was going to beat him up with a knife. If he had to fight, it almost wouldn't have been fair. He thought that he'd give the confused stunty the benefit of the doubt and try to talk to the guy again. No sense hurting the little guy if he didn't have to.

He looked down at the metal object. It was still smoking and looking all black in it's hole in the earth.

He looked up at the stunty. He was all short and weak and annoying. He almost looked adorable with his knife and robes...but he was an ugly kind of adorable. Mostly because that's what stunties were - ugly. Their faces were all ugly and green and ugly and stuff. Would he really give this item to the stunty?

Why not?

The orc looked the stunty up and down one more time and merely shrugged his shoulders. OK. You want it stunty? I got nothin' for it. Feel free to have it.

With that, Lok'tar took the club off his back, made a sweeping motion with it in front of him so that it pointed at the object in the ground at the end. He brought his other hand to his midsection in an open pose. It almost seemed as if he was showing off a new donkey for sale or something that he was really proud of. Almost giving an invitation for the stunty to come and check things out.

(Sorry about the delay, it's been another rough week here for me. Should be regular again though)

Strangely enough, the orc relinquished his crouched position over the object:

OK. You want it stunty? I got nothin' for it. Feel free to have it.

This gesture of generosity… What the hell? Orcs aren’t nice… they aren’t friendly or kind or gentle or generous. They are greedy! They are big, greedy, idiots! What manner of orc is this? He must be up to something…

Cautiously, Valithys took another step forward, testing the waters. But before he could get a clear interpretation of that stupid face, the blinding glint of metal assaulted his vision. The now fully-revealed object had caught just the right angle of light, causing him to blink furiously and rub his eyes in frustration. Glancing downward again at the object, he clearly identified three cryptic characters plastered onto the side of the metal cylinder: “S P A”.

What the hell does that mean? This is no ordinary orc – he must be a shapeshifter of some sort, trying to trick me into who knows what! I’ll have to strike now while he still thinks he has the best of me…

Without a word to prematurely betray his intentions, he sheathed his dagger and immediately sprung off of his readily bent legs onto all fours in a loping stride towards the “orc” [Spelunker Agility], covering the remaining distance in a split second. Leaping aggressively towards his target, he reached forth with his left hand, placing his palm squarely on the chest and releasing a surge of energy [Earth Jilt].

(Meant to post yesterday - Skyrim happened...)

Lok'tar really couldn't care about the metal object. It was round, smelled rather good (no matter how strange it could be) and just the slightest bit interesting. However, he was staring down a goblin that, given a bit more time, could likely be foaming at the mouth to find a way to get by him just to see the thing. He really couldn't care less. While he normally wouldn't think twice about beating down a stunty that was standing in his way, this time he found himself standing in the way of the stunty! Honestly, he couldn't care less about what happened to the metal object and there were other more glorious opportunities to be had in the future. He didn't have time to waste with this pathetic excuse. His offer should be enough and he could be on his way while the goblin got his fix.

The goblin stuck his dagger back in its sheath and Lok'tar continued to wait for the goblin to go by. He had been turned slightly sideways as a result of his pose and wasn't really ready for much of anything. Not that anything really should have happened. I mean, an orc couldn't conjure up much of a ruse for anything. Even if they tried really hard! There just wasn't any good reason for the orc to do so. And a race of creatures that claims to be as clever as the goblins should have been able to figure that out...but sometimes you can outsmart even yourself.

All of this mean that in the end, he couldn't believe his eyes - the stunty decided to jump him!

The odds of him doing a whole lot of damage with any attack, much less an attack with his bare hands, would be laughable at best, but the goblin dropped to all fours like a dog - and came right at him! He covered the ground rather quickly and before the orc really knew what to do against this appalling show of aggression, the robed creature had done a small hop into the air and placed his hand on his chest. The warrior was just about to laugh at the cuteness of the goblin trying to get out of his way. It was almost like he was a small child going for a new toy.

If a small child could punch like that, he'd be a dangerous one indeed.

Lok'tar quickly found himself surprised and on his butt. He was a bit winded, but there was mostly just a lot of wounded pride at stake here. There was no questioning what the stunty had done to him. There were magics involved because there was no way a goblin would be able to push like that! He had been insulted - with magic! His generosity had been thrown back in his face and there was going to be hell to pay for this. Lok'tar stood up, a little dizzier for the experience and got angry.

YOU WANNA DANCE STUNTY?

He reached down to get his club and when he came up with it, gave a roar...

LET'S DANCE!

[Illusions of Grandeur]

The orc started to chant a song in orcish that he had heard from the older orcs in his former clan. It was a story about glory and power and how only those who cared to wield it actually would. As he did so, the air around him seemed to crackle and split as various bolts of ether seemed to split around him. He seemed to grow more ominous and frightening with each passing moment. When the transformation was complete after a few seconds, the goblin would be staring down an orc that had increased in height and bulk by about half and was surrounded by a crackling shield of lightning.

The shapeshifter was thrust backwards, landing with an apparently blunt impact against the hard earth below. His face (if it even was a he – the identity of these shapeshifters is a tricky concept) was distorted, revealing his mixed emotions of surprise and fury. Staggering to his feet, the orc lifted his club and bellowed in his rage:

YOU WANNA DANCE STUNTY?

LET'S DANCE!

The orc’s deep voice echoed across the open field, and as these reverberations began to fade, the voice resumed, this time in a more ominous and cryptic tone, emanating from one green, bulky epicenter, but permeating the very fibers of the surrounding air. Despite the powerful resonation of the voice, the words were incomprehensible: presumably orcish, but quite possibly of some other foreign tongue. Valithys took a cautious step backwards from the crater in the earth, wary now of some powerful spell on the tips of the shifter’s fingers. Suddenly, the dry air sparked immediately to Valithys’s right, causing him to take a bounding leap backwards in surprise. It wasn’t long before the entire area surrounding the orc was ignited in shining sparks, foreboding the awesome power that was sure to come. Just as Valithys had gathered his wits and had begun to pool the energy for his next action, the orc had begun to grow in size.

No doubt some dark shapeshifter magic. I’ll have to interfere now before he becomes too powerful.

The odd metal object was now long forgotten; Valithys was focused now on nothing more than stopping this mad shifter from turning the little goblin into a pile of ash. Draining his energy into his fingertips, he released a wave of energy into the earth at his feet. The soil began to crack, slowly at first, but as the crevice traveled and formed ever more tributaries, its pace quickened, shrinking the distance to the target until it would ultimately erupt at the unsuspecting orc’s feet, knocking him off of his now even bulkier legs [Earth Wave].

The stunty was standing on his own down the road. He was scared! It was completely awesome to have the power like this at your command. Or, rather, have it command you. He didn't really care how it worked; he just knew that he had POWER. Power and glory were often linked together. It was difficult to have one without the other. Having one just made the other easier. The goblin was jumping around in surprise because he knew that there was pain coming. He had to know that things were about to get messy. Now, Lok'tar needed to prove it. But first, he needed to put a little bit of extra on his energy.

He stepped back dramatically, waved his arms in the air and felt the power come surging up his arms. It manifested in the pooling of the purple haze at his fingertips as he pointed them at his enemy. He let it go with a flick of his wrist towards the stunty.

Or at least, that was the idea. [Doh It Again!, Spellcast Failure, Illusions of Grandeur]

The energy came to the end of his arms and seemed to just dissipate after a rather momentous buildup. The orc stood there, completely confused as to what had happened to him. A totally stunned look rolled over his face and he looked both confused and angry. To make matters worse, a small scale fizzure opened up in the ground near his feet and spikes of rock jutted out from the ground in front of him. He was pushed back from the spikes of earth and was knocked back, disorienting him momentarily. If there would be any defending from another attack, it would have to be on pure instinct. The stunty had played his opening hand well, but there was much more fight to be had.

As the cracks in the earth began to expand, Valithys turned his gaze upwards, now connecting with the huge orc before him. What had already been almost twice his size was now nearly thrice his height, and the bulging muscles on his arms and legs seemed to pulse as if begging to release their new-found energy on the nearest goblin-shaped target. The air around him still crackled with energy as tiny sparks appeared ephemerally at seeming random points in the surrounding space.

He pointed his massive arms at Valithys, forming a cloud of purple haze at his fingertips. Despite its menacing appearance, the mist dissipated, and Valithys was sure that the little drops had melted into the giant shifter’s skin, about to cause havoc of currently indeterminable measure and form. An interesting look plastered his face, one of confusion – or perhaps it was anger? The odd expression was impossible to decipher, further supporting his guess of the taint of powerful magic in the spell.

But that countenance was soon replaced with one of blatant pain as the orc was knocked backwards on his rear again by the erupting fissure at his feet. The quake subsided, but the protruding rocks had wrestled the long-forgotten metal cylinder from the nearby crater, releasing a gleam of reflected light as it casually rolled from its former resting place, coming to a halt only a few feet away. It was now directly between the two of them – a short little goblin standing with knees bent at the ready and a massive orc now sitting stupidly on his rear in a daze. The object caught Valithys’s eye, and he suddenly realized that the fourth and final character was revealed: “M”. “S-P-A-M”. His initial fears at the sight of such a bizarre device instantly resurface as he mulled the acronym over in his mind. “S-P-A-M”. What the hell does that mean? It must be orcish, or whatever language that orc was chanting… some kind of magic weapon no doubt.

Even though the massive orc was helpless on the ground, Valithys could not force himself to strike again. He had blown his cool at the sight of the orc’s startling increase in size, but now he was beginning to regret it – any slight miscalculation would now surely lead to his demise. Restlessly shifting his weight between his feet and eyeing the object between them, he made his decision: with all of the strength in his legs, he sprinted towards the can, snatching the device up while the orc was still too dazed to object, and turned abruptly on his heels, distancing himself as much as possibly before the shifter could regain his footing.

As Lok'tar was off-balance, he managed to keep his eye on the stunty that was darting in front of him. The shifty little guy was obviously up to something. It might hve something to do with that hole in the road that he was looking at, but he wasn't totally sure. What he did know is that he needed to make sure that the stunty knew his place. He was a lousy-knuckle dragging goblin that had dared to insult and challenge one of the greatest warriors to stride over this world. That was not something to take lightly. That was something for which the nameless stunty would have to pay.

Unfortunately, the stunty seemed to be running faster than he originally anticipated, which could be problematic if he tried to engage him in hand-to-hand combat. He got mad at the prospect of the scrawny green thing getting away. He got even more upset when he saw the goblin quickly grab the smoldering object out of the ground and make like a scared rabbit. He realized that there was nothing that he could really do with his hands that could help him at this point. Heck, there was nothing that he could do while he was sitting on his butt. However, he could do one thing about it: get mad. So, he let out a great bellow to express his displeasure at the possible retreat of his opponent. As he did, the magic that coursed through him quickly caused his right hand to snap off the ground at a ninety-degree angle.

As his arm came up, he glared at his enemy and let loose a growl that sounded like a rock grinding on a piece of glass. A quick surge of purple haze leapt down his arm and arced through his fingers. The effect was rather impressive, considering his size, effective aura and the fact that he was doing all of this from a sitting position. It may have been more impressive from a standing position, but when magic power flowed, you really didn't stop what was going on because you weren't going to get any “style points”. The energy pooled in his hand for a fraction of a second, gathering its strength, and then went rocketing towards its target – the lower midsection of the goblin. [Psychic Bolt + 1 telekinesis]

Satisfied that he was going to do something to his target, Lok'tar got up, grabbed his club and got ready to continue to bring the pain.
