OK, so here's where things are going to be posted regarding matchups, bracketing and such. You'll also see character sheets here. Post all discussion in the relevant thread.

---> Individual Battle Format:
- Battles are going to be one page in length each. (total of 15 posts in the thread)
- Initial posts will be made by myself to set the stage for each battleground, leaving seven posts a side for each player.
- There will be a post cap in effect over the course of the tournament of 400 words each. Since the initial post of a battle is critical, each player is permitted 600 words in their first post of the battle. Please stick to this - I will be checking at random points in time. (Obviously summons, skill uses, etc. don't count.) Flagrant disregard for this rule could be grounds for disqualification.
- Victors for each battle will be chosen by one of three forms: KO, disqualification or poll.

---> Tournament Format
- The preliminary round of combat will be six one-on-one duels (randomly determined; if you don't like the matchup, you can yell at my dice). The winners of each fight will go on to the next round. In addition, two wild cards will be determined based on performance among the losers of the initial matchups.
- The remaining contenders will duke it out in a standard double-elimination tournament format.

---> Global Rules
- Disqualifications will be handed out to people for repeated unfairness and time-out. Timing out will be different than the Zodiac was. For each battle, there will be a four (4) day post requirement. If a player fails to post within that time period in their battle at any point, they will be issued a warning and given 24 hours to complete the post. Failing this, they will be eliminated. Each player will be permitted one warning per battle.
- Have fun kicking the crap out of each other!

---> Prizes and Compensation
- Since this tournament involves multiple battles, compensation will be given accordingly. However, because this will be a smaller scale tournament, NO MEDALS WILL BE AWARDED, although the possibility of the victor receiving a custom item still exists. It will likely be a strong skill with gold for the winner and other prizes for second and third.

So, without further ado, your initial matchups:

Calash517 vs. Wolf231
bluedragonfire vs. fish-orb
Nevercroft vs. Boy Killa :)
vonTelsa vs. Chase
koko_menoso vs. ULTRA
jodai vs. Scottsonknight

If there's any new developments/anything I forgot, I'll post it here.

If you want to use a simple word count editor (just in case you don't use Word or something like that with a built-in counter), you can find one here: http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/scr ... ords.shtml

Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) – Weak
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... nWolf1.jpg
The Ethiopian wolf is a smaller relative of the wolf. It is about the size of a medium sized dog. It doesn’t have the power and strength of its larger relatives but can still deliver a good bite. It has often been mistaken for a fox due to its red coat and fox like tail. It thrives in high up climates able to deal well with low temperatures. It has excellent sense of smell and hearing. – 3 posts

Name: Acheron
Class: Assassin

Explanation of Specials

Proof of Theory - Acheron can utilize his shadowy past to 'jump' from different shadows. He can use this to avoid attacks, but it requires him to be aware of the enemy who is attacking him. He cannot go very far.
[1x]-[W]

Threading the Needle - Acheron can use the God-Link to hurl the dagger long distances with fairly acute accuracy. He can even control the flight path of it, although not well. The maximum effective range is 35 meters.
[2x]-[M]

--------------------------------

Name: Mazdakai of the Bridge of Stars
Class: Summoner

Summons:

ALL SUMMONS USED!

---------------------

Name: Darious, Student of the Arts
Class: Martial Artist

Swift Jab

One of the many lessons that Darious was taught during his extensive training was that strength alone was not enough to win a battle. To achieve victory a Martial Artist has to use all forms of combat, strength speed and skill. As such Darious has formed a technique that using his natural strength in one attack, but the attack is delivered at moderately swifter than normal. However due to the speed, the jab is slightly inaccurate. (Weak) 2x per Battle

Tiger Strike

An advance offensive move of the true arts, The Tiger Strike is all about concentrated power delivered in a crushing blow. Using a single half open fist or ‘Tiger Paw’ as the fist is called, Darious lashes out at his normal attacking speed with what appears to be a normal punch. However due to the technique of tensing muscles and concentrating strength the punch packs extremely more strength then an ordinary punch. However the sudden release of power leaves Darious breathless for one post afterwards. (Medium) 3x per battle

---------------------------------

Name: Vius Ottum
Class: Warlock (Lightcaster)

Spell Descriptions:

Bright Ray: The warlock is given a small bit of the southern cross and lets loose a small beam of light from the palm of their hand. This beam stings on contact with bear skin and can be used to annoy the opponent, but it does little else. [Light, Weak/Instant/warlock] 4x per battle

Sunspark: The warlock brings forward the power of the southern cross and, upon touching the opponent, unleashes a small burst of sunlight from their hands. This shoves the target back slightly and leaves a burn mark. [Light, Weak/Instant/warlock] 3x per battle

An aide ran up to the king as he was speaking to one of the construction foremen that was overseeing the restoration of the old arena. It was nearing its completion, but as with most government work projects, it was behind schedule. It probably didn't help that the king decided to take everything that went on very personally and deemed it necessary that he have input on almost every aspect of the project.

"Sir! The contestants for the tournament have been arriving daily and since you decided to make the matchups public to attempt to draw crowds, the contestants have found out as well. Some of them have been eyeing each other very closely around town and the tension between some of them has grown to quite the pitch in some circumstances. It has even escalated to fights breaking out. Not the fighters themselves - they are much too restrained for that, but the fans that some of these people have already seemed to attract."

The king cursed under his breath. His propensity for the dramatic and grandiose had backfired and now the consequences could be quite costly. He had to do something or risk unrest developing throughout the city.

"Fine. Get them fighting then! Take each pair of contestants and have them fight it out in various parts of the city. People will then have the option to watch their favorites up close...if they want to get that close... Hopefully, getting things started tomorrow, coupled with the rest days after the first round of the tournament will give my incompetent workers enough time to put the finishing touches on this place."

"As you wish sir."

Round one has begun! Good luck to all.

The polls for this tournament will go (roughly) for four days. Therefore, if you haven't voted in the current polls, they will be closed on Saturday and Sunday. Unless it's a tie, in which case, I'll go beat down people that haven't voted. If that doesn't work, then I'll just have to pick a winner (and you don't want that, do you people??!?).

So, get your votes in!

As it has been stated in the rules at the beginning of the thread, a player has 4 days to post in their battle, or they will incur a warning against that battle. After this warning, they will have 24 hours to post, or be disqualified from the tournament.

Therefore, ULTRA is hereby served his warning for this round of the tournament. If he is found to have not posted within 24 hours of the time listed on this posting, he will be eliminated from the tournament (you're lucky that I didn't notice this earlier...)

Thank you.

Holy crap, I've been asleep at the wheel on this one!!!!

As it has been stated in the rules at the beginning of the thread, a player has 4 days to post in their battle, or they will incur a warning against that battle. After this warning, they will have 24 hours to post, or be disqualified from the tournament.

Therefore, Chase is hereby served his warning for this round of the tournament. If he is found to have not posted within 24 hours of the time listed on this posting, he will be eliminated from the tournament (you're extremely lucky that I didn't notice this earlier...)

If you haven't realized it yet, the last post has gone up in the first round of the Foundations Tournament.

The last poll is slowly winding its way towards completion (which means, if you haven't voted yet...go do that next!)

But, most of you are probably asking yourself (or I'm just telling you that you're asking yourself), "What's next, Ding?"

Well, if things go according to plan, the clash of arms will be heard in Teranok sometime at the end of next week. Here's how I'd like things to unfold.

Step 1: The closing of the poll between vonTelsa and Chase on Sunday (obviously, this has to happen for everything to go ahead).

Step 2: Announcement of the contestants that are advancing to the next round and the unveiling of the twist going into the next round.

Step 3: Wait for the re-submissions to occur that spring from the round twist. During this time, the fluff for the second round will be written and posted (I'm tailoring it to the people that are advancing in the tournament.

Step 4: Post the next round matchups after the re-submissions are finished. (That way, you're not tailoring them to your specific opponent...force you to use the ol' noggin...)

Step 5: Post the relevant threads and the next round will be officially underway.

So, sharpen your swords, reinforce your armor and get your sleep - the next round begins soon!

The Foundations Tournament - Chapter 2

King Cyden paced back and forth across the room, huffing, puffing and generally hauling his 300-pound frame as fast as it could go. “What do you mean?” he raved, shouting at the top of his lungs. “It’s been two weeks since we tripled the labor assigned to this project!! What do you mean that it’s not going to be done in time for the next elimination round?”

“That’s just it sire,” the ever-present hapless scribe commented. “We are going to need to involve magical means to finish the job.”

“Magical means, what kind of magical means?” The king’s brow furrowed. ‘Magical means’ resulted in the downfall of the Zodiac Tournament, in his opinion. Fancy shortcuts, showy arenas in remote places and the frivolous usage of powers that are beyond anyone’s true control led to the tournament’s ultimate demise.

“He means, like us…” as two hooded figures, each carrying a different colored scepter, entered the room.

****************

The courtyard was teeming with people standing under the balcony that overlooked the façade of the nearly-constructed arena. There was a roped-off section under the balcony with a raised platform that was covered with various bunting and looked as if there would be some presentation there momentarily as well.

People were laughing, shouting and buzzing over the news that was about to be released in mere moments. Less scrupulous types were having a field day ‘lightening’ coin purses as people had brought their money in hopes of securing tickets to the matchups that would be held in the first round of their majestic arenas. Some of the local vendors decided that today would be a good enough day to make a go of selling food and other items related to the tournament, such as pennants, flags and caricatures of various competitors within the tournament. Everyone was happy today, and they had every right to be. The person that won this tournament would be the ultimate leader of their cities glorious armies and restore safety and honor to their home.

Presently, a group of trumpeters carrying the long horns of some desert creature appeared in front of the raised platform and in unison gave wind to their instruments. The long, deep blast went rumbling and rippling over the crowd and brought a hush over the people that were standing there. When all was silent, a herald standing among the group lifted his trained voice and shouted, “Hear one, hear all! His glorious majesty King Burnak, with a royal proclamation about the Foundations Tournament!!”

With that announcement, the crowd went ballistic; screaming, clapping and cheering erupted from all corners of the courtyard. The King, in full royal regalia, stepped out onto the upper balcony, smiling, with his arms upraised. He basked in the glory of the moment and dropped his arms, signaling for quiet.

“My people, I alone cannot bask in your gratitude – I give you the warriors of the Foundations Tournament!” On cue, the trumpeters began blasting a rousing tune as an honor guard of four soldiers appeared from one of the side doors leading into the arena. The crowd in that area parted and the parade of competitors began trooping to the raised platform. They were accompanied by four more guards holding up the rear. The crowd went nuts, chanting the names of their favorites and attempting to reach out and touch them. They were heroes already in the minds of the people.

The King lowered his arms, requesting silence once more.

“My beloved children, I give you the warriors of the tournament. All brave and bold souls who are competing for glory and honor that can be given by only you, the people. Eight different people, eight different styles of fighting are presented here for your consideration. But the question is, who should fight for you? Or more specifically, who should fight the other?”

And on that cue, a group of scribes and paper-carrying servants appeared from the back of the crowd, taking up positions on the edges of the throng.

“I have decided that it will be you!”

A murmuring swept through the crowd as they contemplated the repercussions of such an action. The power to choose would be within their grasp? Such a thing was unheard of.

“Choose wisely, my children! The fate of our realm truly lies within your grasp even now.”

And with that, King swept himself back within the arena and the crowd surged towards the scribes, eager to register their votes for who they wanted to see fight one another. The trumpeters sounded again and the competitors were escorted within the arena for an audience with the King.

************

“My brave and noble competitors. I have grave news for you.”

The king had brought the group of warriors into the chamber immediately behind the balcony that he had just finished addressing the people from. There was no view into the arena from this vantage point. In fact there were no windows at all, so the room was lit dimly with lamps that were on stands placed around the room.

“The arena will not be completed in time without help. I have enlisted the assistance of two mages for this task, although I will only need one. One is a black mage, the other white; a servant of chaos and another of order. That is all they were willing to divulge about their agendas. Both of them demanded a price in addition to the gold fee to construct the arenas – control of the psychic wards surrounding the entrances to the arena floor. I don’t have to tell you what that means; anything that you could guess would be close to the truth.”

He motioned to the urn sitting in front of them.

“Each one of you has been given two beads. One black and one white. Upon your turn, you will take a bead, place it in your grip and extend your hand within the urn, maintaining full secrecy. Release your bead and then deposit the other in the urn beside the door on the way out. In this way, you will choose how this round is fought.”

And with that, the haggard scribe accompanying the King began to read the names of the fighters so that the voting could begin.

All right, now that I've given the RP for the next round of the tournament ample time to stew, here's what it means for all of you guys!

1. Tournament Format

From here on out, the tournament is going to be "Olympic Style". Essentially, I thought that single elimination was too harsh and double elimination is just way too annoying and takes forever, so we're going Olympic Style. For the uninitiated, I'm modeling this after Olympic Hockey, but I'm thinking its similar to the World Cup as well.

Basically, we skipped the round robin portion of the tournament and went straight into the playoff rounds. The last round eliminated four people. The coming round will eliminate four more. After that, those two matchups will determine the final two - one of which will be for first place and the other slugging it out for third.

2. Prizes

Now that you know how you'll be slugging it out, let's tell you what you'll be slugging it out for:

First Prize:
    A strong skill/special.
A 20 gold credit towards a custom item or 15 gold in cold, hard cash.
The ability to fill out that you've won a tournament with this character.

Second Prize:
    A medium skill/special
A 15 gold credit towards a custom item or 12 gold in cold, hard cash.

Third Prize:
    A medium skill/special
9 gold of cold, hard cash.

Keep in mind that the global disqualification rules remain in effect and being DQed for any reason automatically renders you ineligible for any of these prizes. (Even if you're duking it out for first place.)

3. The Twist for the Second Round (competitors)

This part of the twist is open to competitors ONLY.

The twist for the second round involves the construction of the Teranok arena. Each magician will bestow a given aspect upon the players skills/specials, depending on what happens:

--->If more votes are received for the white mage, all competitors will receive one (1) weak OR medium skill/special of their choice (pending approval, of course, splitting not allowed).

---> If more votes are received for the black mage, one (1) skill/special of ANY strength will be removed from each character as determined by their opponent in the next round. However, their opponent will be allowed to protect one (1) skill/special at their discretion.

Votes on this topic should be forwarded directly to me. All posting in the tournament threads will be ignored, only those received by me in PM will be considered official. Each vote should consist of the following:

Character name:
Vote: (black mage or white mage)
Name and descrption of new skill or spell: (to be used in the event that the white mage is chosen)
Name of skill/spell to be protected: (in the event that the black mage is chosen)

*NOTE*: All votes must have both elements involved, due to the fact that the results of the black/white decision will not be revealed until after all polling has been collected (which may occur before the deadline if all eight votes are received). Any votes that are incomplete are deemed to being willingly lacking in the given area and as a result, may not allow the character to receive protection or a new skill/special in the next round.

All competitors have until 23:00 on May 9, 2009, GMT to cast their vote.

*In the event of a tie, the side that gets their votes in earliest will be considered the winner...so get on it!*

4. The Twist for the Second Round (non-competitors)

This part of the twist is open to non-competitors ONLY. Competitors are not permitted to vote.

So, if you've enjoyed the first round of the tournament, why not participate vicariously through the second round too? I'm looking for people to vote on which competitor matchups that they would like to see in the next round. You can tell me only one matchup if you like, or set up all four for me too! Think of the different options that are available and project on me your hopes and dreams.

Feel free to talk about matchups and ideas within the tournament threads, but remember that only votes that are forwarded to me will count.

All non-competitors have the same deadline (23:00 on May 9, 2009, GMT) to cast their vote.

5. Competitors....

Oh yeah...

I should probably tell you who made it to the next round...

Mazdakai of the Bridge of Stars / vonTelsa
Kate Darksmith / Boy Killa :)
Stolatos / Wolf231
Kronk / koko_menoso
Scottsonknight
Gardrim Ralyindare / fish-orb
Vius Ottum / Jodai **
Darious / Chase **

**These characters are in the next round on the strength of the wild card positions, which I have determined for reasons that sound good to me. I'm not going to explain them to everyone, so please don't ask/complain about it.

Good luck to everyone!

And remember...the clock is ticking...

OK...these are the matchups.

vonTelsa vs. Scottsonknight (most popular demand - by a mile)
jodai vs. Boy Killa :)
koko_menoso vs. fish-orb
Wolf231 vs. Chase

And the black mage prevailed in the voting. The voting ended in a tie at 4-4, so we went to the tiebreaker, which was the team that was in first with their votes. There was a 1 hour, 46 minute difference in time between the last two votes.

These are the protected skills...

vonTelsa: Ulvaria
Scottsonknight: Speed Spirit
jodai: Wings of Light
Boy Killa :) : Legendary Assassin
koko_menoso: Berserker's Torment
fish-orb: Dire Elk transformation
Wolf231: Increased Intelligence
Chase: Flurry of Blows

So, for all those not competing, your time is done; thanks for the votes on matchups.

For those who arecompeting, please PM what you would like to be removed from your opponent as soon as possible so we can get this party started.

All right everyone, good news...the second round is about to begin! The matchups are decided and everyone has supplied what they are removing from their opponent's characters. So, I'm in the process of modifying the character sheets to reflect the new realities and the threads for combat will be posted tomorrow!

(Just thought that I'd give everyone the heads up.)

And for those people that don't feel like going back through their character sheets to find out what went missing...here's the info for you:

vonTelsa: Elanix Summon
Scottsonknight: Spirit Phase
Chase: Chi
Wolf231: Tremor Seal
jodai: Beamstrike
Boy Killa :) : Inner Resolve
koko_menoso: Toughened Demeanor
fish-orb: Wildcat Transformation

A couple of interesting things that you might like to know:

1. These deletions may be permanent (for tournament purposes, of course). That's for me to know and you to find out...

2. All global rules will remain in effect. (Word limit, page limit, DQ conditions...everything...)

Foundations Tournament: Chapter 3

It was shaped like a coliseum with benches circling a central ring as they ascended higher and higher up the walls of the sides of the area. Thousands packed those stands as they all waited for the first matches in the Teranok arena to begin. The audience was a veritable sea of color as the hues of clothing, pennants and flags splashed their tints all over an otherwise drab looking sandstone structure. Those in the crowd were abuzz with conversation and activity as they muttered and murmured about what would be happening next. Some of them even tried to start the masses cheering for one competitor or another, obviously showing their support for one of the would-be champions that were fighting for the glory given in this prestigious tournament. Fate (or shrewd planning...) had conspired to only allow one duel per day, in a move that would undoubtedly increase ticket sales and the amount of people attending the tournament as the hype continued to build.

Being that it was a desert city, the heat was beginning to rise in the open-air facility as the sun neared its zenith and there was absolutely no clouds in the bright blue sky. There was nothing built into the facility, save the many drink vendors, that would be readily available to keep the crowds cool. Some would say this was a design flaw, while others praised the opportunity to make some extra gold. A smell of sweat and other bodily odor filled the air as the packed throng of onlookers patiently awaited the beginning of the day's action.

The fighting ring itself was dug directly into the ground about 10 feet deep and the walls consisted of the bedrock of the hole and directly in front of it was a layer of wood about three feet thick, shipped in at great cost to the city and painted a drab red. Large steel doors were the only exception to the wood construction, whose massive frames spanned the entire height of the wall and were just as wide as they were high. One door stood as an entrance from each of the cardinal directions and were the only visible means of gaining access to the arena floor. That floor was covered with a layer of sand thick enough to provide traction to the competitors, but not enough to cushion a fall or cause any impediment to movement for anyone. It was also put in place to allow for the easy removal of the blood stains that were likely to occur. Of all the construction of the arena, the colors seemed to flow together rather well; the muted earth-tones of the sandstone, the calming beige of the sand and even the inauspicious red that tinted the walls fit the schema perfectly.

But those spires...

They seemed to be crafted of black onyx with white, red and pink swirling throughout as it proudly displayed it natural color. Each one was firmly wedged into the wooden wall, rising up like a spear or javelin of stone, with a jagged looking spearhead topping the construction. About four feet in height, they were placed precisely every six feet all away around the wall. They seemed to have a faint, dark aura about them and hummed very quietly. More than one overzealous fan had reached out to touch them in an attempt to divine their purpose. They quickly succumbed to a sudden weakness and fatigue and more often than not, passed out and had to be carried away to be given attention from the healers that were present in the area.

Presently, trumpeters sounded their long horns with a deep booming sound that rumbled down the arena steps from their perches high near the top of the wall. A herald stepped forward onto a platform that was built into the western side of the arena about halfway up the bleachers for this very purpose. He unrolled the scroll that he carried to read the proclamation that would announce the bout and began to read.

-------

The second round has officially begun!

Good luck.

P.S. Remember that quoting dialogue still counts towards your word limit...so you might be better off summarizing!
