The silent charm of the Mystone forest had been interrupted by the sloshing movements of the little corpse. A young human body moved along the forest floor in a stiff manner. Much like the movement of ents, each step was slow and drawn out as if the entire body was resisting the command to move. There was no path that the child took, wandering between trees randomly, yet with a sense that the child knew exactly where he was going.

The sun was setting in the west navigating the forest was starting to become more difficult, still this did not hinder the hike of the child. He moved slowly, but with great purpose. The corpse wanted to return home before the night, before reaching the second day of decomposition. Already the joins were beginning to stiffen and lock, despite the aloe the Saurojin plant was pumping through the bloodstream. Preservation could not be established, even in a fresh corpse; though there was a distraction.

As the leaves rushed by him, and the twigs snapped beneath him, he was unaware of the eyes that had fallen upon him. The boy’s body was nearly perfect, save for the gaping hole in the throat. The large stem of the second mouth was visible through this hole. However, the preserved corpse had its drawbacks. There were no holes in the back of the head for eyes to move in and out, so vision was focused forward instead of in all directions. There was also no hole in the chest for the second mouth to emerge from, but that was less than vital; if need be the mouth could always eat its way through flesh.

Through the last hour of daylight the body moved on, one foot after the other; carrying the Hubris curse with him.

The forest had an allure to it that had beckoned her back to the sacred place she had found so many nights ago, seeking refuge from the battles of the land. Within the closely grown trees of the outer ring around the ruin's main attraction, she stepped lightly from branch to branch, grasping the thick trunks as she made her way towards the statue she had seen in the distance. Even though the forest seemed calm, it was also agitated in a way, and as she drew closer, she could feel it as well.

Something was headed to the ruins as well.

Moving quickly, scanning the area, she came across the boy walking stiffly through the trees, his clothes dirty, his steps resistant. It was as if the boy did not wish to move, and yet something was pulling him towards the great ruins anyways. She frowned and followed the boy a little longer through the trees, her kris ready just in case. With the clearing of the Ruins ahead of them both, the sun setting of to send great shadows under the trees, she decided to act now.

Jumping from her tree, she landed on all fours her right leg bent under her as her left leg was thrust back, her left hand set to balance her as her right arm was held wide with her kris in hand. "What are you doing here child?" she asked in her harsh voice, slowly coming out of her crouch to stand at her full height, the new armour on her resisting the movements slightly, though she was growing accustomed to it. "Turn and face me."

Whatever she had been expecting was not what she found in the walking corpse.

The watching eyes had grown tired of their stalk, and thus the sylvan, Nuncia, took action against the strange intruder to her forest. The elf did not yet know that if the forest belonged to anyone, it belonged to the Tree of Saurojin; not the elves nor the druids of lore. Soon though, she would learn who the true grove masters were. Yes, she might just live to see that day.

Hubris turned, as requested, to face the elf woman who had been stalking him. The body’s mouth opened wide, almost unhinging completely, and revealed the second mouth. Tongue of vine and teeth of thorn; Hubris With the voice of a whisper, Hubris spoke.

“Know not to who you speak. Far from child... Farm from human...”

A barbed smile of thorns beamed at, Nuncia. Sylvan were not bad people, and they had their place in the new world, the world Saurojin would one day create. It was not as much a role as keeper and protector as much as it was as servants. Waiting hand and foot on their ent masters. True this was not far from the current relationship, but it was all the understanding of what one was to the other.

“Hello…” The hybrid of flesh and plant spoke again. “Hubris… You?”

“Know not to who you speak. Far from child... Far from human...

The child turned around and with mouth wide open it spoke to her, but not the child speaking, but the plant within. Its sharp teeth within the second mouth grinned at her as if he had recognized her and was pleased. Immediately she dropped her kris, her head bowing a little. In her mind, this was a God from her world, though he had no name in their tongue, that had gathered a body to do his work on earth, far from the Great Trees of legend. And he had sought her out. Why else would he be wandering to the very same ruin she was headed to?

"Hello… Hubris… You?”

Its speech was disjointed and raspy at best, but living within a foreign body would do that to any god. She raised her head to look at him, her smile growing.

"I am Nuncia Algos, Keeper of the forests of Darkness Incarnate." She had so many questions to ask, but she felt it rude to bombard a God come to earth with mundane things as hers. Though one question pressed more than the rest. "May I ask why you are headed to the Ruins?"

She had her suspicions of the ruins belonging to the world of the Sylvaans and Dryads of the Old World, but to have a God seek them out after so long... Her musings must have been correct. Why else would a God seek out a pile of rubble? Though the statue looked intact from so far up in the trees, she doubted the rest would be so well maintained, and hoped the God Hubris wouldn't be too upset about it.

Upon seeing the botanical features of Hubris, she dropped who defenses and bowed before the higher life form as a god. Sylvan were a very entertaining race to Hubris. Through the stalk eyes he looked upon the woman as one might look upon a faithful canine. Little did Hubris know that thinking of her as a ‘pet’ would be a closer fit that the being knew; for this was only the most common form of the sylvan.

“I am Nuncia Algos, keeper of the forests of Darkness Incarnate.” The elf spoke. The word ‘keeper’ struck the cord one would assume to be struck with Hubris. It was not one of anger though, but more of amusement. Had Hubris the lungs to laugh it would. “May I ask why you are headed to the Ruins?”

She knew of Hubris’s home, the long locked away ruins of the Mystone Forest. It was not uncommon; any stonework in a forest would draw attention of the Sylvan. Hubris in truth did not know what had become of a majority of the ruins, having crawled out for the first time in a thousand years. Not since the days of the druids had Hubris seen the outside world.

“Ruins, home… Rebirth, awaken.” The plant being spoke as best it could. Why the races of man, with their limited lives, spent so much time and extra words was beyond the higher being; but it was little concern what the humes did with their time. “Return… Time, running... Body… Preservation, failing.”

The legs move once more. A swift jerk is required as the legs had locked up in their stall. The jerk is nearly enough to bring Hubris to the ground, but instead the right knee catches the body. The slow pace to the secret entrance is resumed.

“Ruins, home… Rebirth, awaken. Return… Time, running... Body… Preservation, failing.”

The god spoke to her, and she got up to get ready to help him if he needed it, watching as he jerked a stiff leg forwards and almost fell, but caught himself with the other. He began walking slowly and stiffly through the trees towards the Ruins, his home. She smiled. She knew the ruins were special, and of course they were; they were the home of a God. And not some new world god, but a true god. Hubris. He must have been the god of all things in the plant world, that her people worshiped with their songs and protection, though he never had a name, Hubris worked just fine for her. It was better than calling him God all the time.

Walking next to him, she dared ask the next question, but it would help things along a bit, especially if time was running out for the God. "Would you permit me carry you to the Ruins? It would be a lot quicker..." she asked, ready to take the weight of the child's form for the sake of her God. She would do just about anything for this God, not because she had to but because not many knew the Gods of her realm, and here was one in flesh-- well within it at least. And it was one god that she could actually connect to too. The god of all things green and living, though he had no name in her tongue, she now knew a name for him. What would her brother think of this? Or her people? To be next to a God like this?

Nuncia was more than willing to lend any aid she could to her ‘new god’. She offered to carry Hubris to its destination to speed things along. Hesitant to react the being did accept the aid. Why exert force to be carried by one body when another was willing to exert itself to carry both? “Accept.” Hubris said to show compliance.

It was easier to accept being carried by the manner in which Nuncia offered. She made it seem as if Hubris would be doing her a favor. Granting her the honor of allowing her to carry her god; perhaps the worshiper elf would be willing to carry something a little more vital. Perhaps she might even prove herself worthy of that honor. Just perhaps.

With a faint smile and a nod, the lady sylvan understood the one word expression. In an instant she was transforming; dropping her humanoid body for that of a bear, panda bear to be precise. Hubris pause, not sure if it could trust the eye stalks. Eventually, the plant concluded that the woman had in fact become a bear. A fascinating power to be sure, a desired one as well. It was then the hybrid of flesh and fauna realized that animals could prove to be even better hosts. Animals were not on the extermination list however.

Nuncia, the bear, bowed before Hubris, allowing it to climb up and onto her back. Clinging on with stiff fingers, it readies itself for the interesting ride ahead. The second mouth stretched out near the ear of the bear. “Forward.” The mouth spook, ordering its new companion.

With her transformation complete and the god on her back, she made her way through the trees at a steady pace, the dead weight of the body the god possessed not too much of a burden when you were almost twice as heavy. Though her size made it awkward to get through some of the thinner spaces, she began to walk forwards, smiling to herself. Surely the Sylvaan's transformation had impressed the god, or else he wouldn't have let her carry him. His grip was stiff, so Nuncia took care to walk steadily, so as not to bounce him off by accident, taking the directions she was given and following them, feeling that they were indeed headed towards the large grey stalk in the distance she had seen from atop the trees.

A slight detour from a direct track towards the place she thought the ruins were, they were now in denser forest, which she traversed easily enough, weaving between the trees careful of her mount. Soon enough a huge root came into view, dipping into the ground from the side of a small sheer drop off of rock, the root creating a darkened tunnel towards the ruins. She stopped before it, waiting for the next direction, not sure if they could fit through the tunnel the way they were. The root was thicker than the trunks of most of the trees around here, surely belonging to a very old tree, ancient even, though how it was still alive and yet not able to be seen was one thing, the hole it created into the rockface not entirely large enough for more than a person to fit through one at a time. Where the tunnel led, she had her assumptions, but she would know for sure at the end of it. Crouching low she let Hubris dismount if he so chose, getting ready to shift back so she could fit easier into the opening.

The panda woman did well to hasten their trek through the woods, turning a few hours of travel into mere minuets. Before long the two had come across the tunnel Hubris had used to reach the surface. A large root of the tree of Saurojin stretched out of a stone drop off. Just beneath this root was the opening. It was too small for a panda bear to crawl through, so Nuncia bowed down and allowed Hubris to climb off of her bear back. In another instance, she was back in sylvan form.

Hubris walked over toward the hole and reached inside, pulling out two thick vines as he did; holding on to one and giving the other to Nuncia. “Hold… Tug…” Then as an example, Hubris tugged on the vine and was pulled back in return; all the way into the hole and through. Nuncia followed behind soon after, no doubt happy to no longer be as tribal as her kin and wearing leather.

When the two emerged, they were underground in a huge cavern that looked more like an earthy grand hall in a mansion. Blue glowing flowers were growing everywhere, illuminating the underground section of the ruins. Along one of the walls was a waterfall leading to a pound and then a small stream where two deer drank.

All manner of animals lived in the ruins. Along the opposite wall was a small cave where a bear could be seen in slumber. In a small burrow below a root there was a fox family tucking in for the night. Even birds nested high up in the roots dangling from the ceiling. It was a wonderful place, and the one true sanctuary from humanity.

“Home… Beneath Ruins…”

She followed Hubris into the small tunnel, tugging herself along, grateful to have decided on the leather armour now that it had a use. The rocks still scraped her midriff that was exposed as well as her legs and hips, but soon enough the pain was forgotten as she came to the cavern. Paradise, was the first word that flitted through her mind as she looked around her, stream and pond, birds, bears and all other animals here safe from harm. The gentle light from the blue flowers was beautiful as it was mysterious, the whole place as a sanctuary. A true smile opened her face, iluminating it in the gentle light, her yellow orange eyes practically glowing.

“Home… Beneath Ruins…” Hubris said in his disjointed speech as she looked around her. She took a step farther into the gentle light, looking to the animals with a gentle smile.

"Paradise... I wish the world was just like this.... Then everything would be beautiful...." she said softly, going towards the stream to stroke the spotted pelt of the deer as they drank from the pond. If she could live here forever she would, but she knew this was not her home. She turned to look at the god, smiling. She didn't know what else to say at that moment, her words meaning nothing to the beauty around her.

For Nuncia, the view was perfection. She had instantly fallen in love with the entire workings of Hubris’s lair. The landscape, the wildlife, everything about the place was magic to her, and this was only the first room. "Paradise... I wish the world was just like this.... Then everything would be beautiful...." She spoke as she walked over toward the deer.

“In time…” Hubris replied. In time the entire world would be as beautiful as this, once the races of man were purged from paradise.

Walking down the path to Nuncia, the horrible smell did not offend the deer enough to make them leave. The animals in this sanctuary were descendants of the animals who lived here in ancient times, the times of the druid. They have never known life outside the sanctuary. Luckily the incantation of old still continue their process of growing, producing fruit for the beasts who live here to keep them looking the way they do, despite living underground.

“One of many… Rooms… Must go… Deeper.” Hubris said while lifting a finger to point to the far wall. Along it was a large passage way, also lined with the glowing blue flowers. Through it there would be one valley of a room between them and the place that Saurojin was sealed away over a thousand years ago.

“One of many… Rooms… Must go… Deeper.” Hubris said while pointing off to the far wall where the dim lighting of the flowers lit the passage. She turned from the deer looking all over as she walked through, mesmerized by the beauty of just that one room. The sight that met her as she emerged from the passage made her heart stop for a beat.

A slope lead down to a valley, vaulted ceiling where thick trunk like roots grew straight down forming a sort of ancient forest where more animals could be seen, the gentle foliage around them teeming with life. The stream continued on through the rock face to her left to fall into a gentle waterfall, pooling at the bottom to form a small lake, wildlife drinking and playing at the waters edges. The little blue flowers that lit the place were dotted throughout the trees giving it the look of moonlit forest; they continued on everywhere, spreading their gentle light onto the whole of the valley.

Through the trees was a thin path that seemed to stretch on into another area, great roots forming pillars next to the opening, guarding it. The entire forest seemed to be enchanted, and as she drew closer to one of the root-trees, she realized that some of the trees bore a golden yellow-orange fruit resembling apples, that the animals seemed more than content to eat. She picked one from a tree and held it out for a curious deer, who bit into it happily, making her smile more.

She left the deer at the edge of the rooted forest, heading back towards Hubris, still mesmerized. She felt as if she were in a dream of the perfect makings.... The God's words from earlier made her smile grow more. “In time…” In time, this beauty would be the new world. But time was always against beauty like this. In time, another could discover this and destroy it. She got to Hubris and looked over her shoulder at the forests and lakes, the wildlife at peace and ease in this Paradise. "In time, others could find this Sanctuary and all your hard work will be for nothing. Grant me to defend this place and aide in your quest to turn the world into this Utopia. I will do anything for you and this place." She said it with conviction, dedication. She wanted this beauty for the world, no matter the cost of it. She would kill all those who stood in the God's and now her way, just to make this happen. And above all, none shall destroy this Paradise.

The two figures walked through the underground forest of roots. Nuncia went ahead, stopping to take in the land and walking again as Hubris caught up to her. She was an interesting one. All Sylvan were in tune with nature, but there was no memory of one taking such a fondness to wildlife as her. Her desire to protect this lair might be doable. Trips to the surface would leave the Tree of Saurojin vulnerable, and although for now the location was secret enough, hints of danger had already made themselves known.

A week ago, four other Sylvan had managed to enter the lair. They were not as respecting as Nuncia. They were not invited into the depths, yet still they entered as if it were their domain. The four of them were all killed, and the luckiest of them had become the Hubris that left the domain and wandered into the nearest civilization of man. That body was lost but another was able to take up the responsibility of being host to the death plant. That body was the child who walked with the elf.

The valley took more than a handful of minuets to pass though it, but eventually they reached a wall of dangling roots. Hubris stepped forward and the roots did part. It was a tunnel of roots that normally would be impossible to traverse without taking great lengths to chop or burn. This was the only section of the lair in which the glowing paradise rose did not grow. Hubris took the first step through the parted roots. “Close…” Hubris said with the second mouth extended and wrapping around the cheek. Nuncia nodded and followed one step behind. Moments later they stepped out of the tunnel and into the light yet again.

A small room, complete opposite the rest of the lair. This was the very base of the tree of Saurojin, and nestled into the base of the tree, trapped in the wooden embrace, was the very druid who had created the tree; Saurojin himself. Not quite dead, but certainly not alive, Saurojin was trapped inside the tree that had been born from his own back. Vines bore into his chest and forearms. Hair grew down to the floor. There were no legs on this man to be seen as from his waist down was nothing but tree. This was the buffer that kept the sealing spell off of the roots, and allowed them to grow.

She paused at the sight of the great tree, her gaze upwards trailing down until it rested on the druid, suspended between life and death in his prison of bark and roots and vines, the hair trailing long onto the floor pooling beneath him. She took a step forwards, putting a few pieces together.

"This man... he was a druid. This tree, is the tree of Saurojin, yes? Then... is that Saurojin? I've heard myths of Druids of old trying to give life to plants, wills and purpose instead of being servants to their magics... did he succeed?" she asked, looking to Hubris, and back to the form. The longer she looked at the man, the more she realized the tree was Saurojin, and Saurojin was the tree now, as they had become one completely. Irreversibly.

Her mind working faster to try to put the peices together, she came to a point where she could go no farther. The druid had done the impossible. And Hubris was part of this tree, this magcial tree that fed and lived by the blood and power of the man who had given it life. Hubris was no god, she could see that now, but even then, her loyalty was only solidified.

Plants and animals both now had purpose, will, and lives.

It was a mystery before as to why she had been given the heart of an animal and the form of a Sylvaan, but now she saw sense in it. It must have been fate to bring her here, and show her this paradise, with the heart of the animals and the blood of the Forest within her, she was the only one to be able to defend this with complete certainty, dedication. Both her Sylvaan soul and her animal soul loved the woods they had called home, respected the life of each tree and bush as if it were alive with a soul, thanking them each night she was safe to fall asleep, and everyday they lent their cover for her attacks. Now she was staring at a great tree with both a heart and soul, and a will to spread this paradise to all of the world.

This was what the world was meant to be for her.

The sylvan knew enough lore to make accurate guesses. She knew about the druid Saurojin and the tree he had created. But, she still didn’t know enough, and communication between the two was too difficult to fill her in completely.

Hubris stepped over to Saurojin and placed the left hand upon a root. Shortly after, a spotted yellow apple began to grow where the root had been touched. The apple grew and grew at an alarming rate until it was as large as honeydew. Once the fruit had stopped growing, Hubris plucked it and carried it over to Nuncia. “Eat… All be known…”

Within the apple rested the sum of Saurojin’s memories and personality. It was the easiest way to communicate with anyone at the moment. Once she bit into apple a chemical reaction would occur. Much like an accurate hallucination, all of the memories would rush into her at once. She would see and know the events of that past like a fleeting dream. “Eat… Eat and Know…”
