I wouldn't bet. In fact we think that we will need 1 or more dedicated servers with unlimited transfer/month and big bandwidth. If you take a look out there you can see that these specs costs more than 100$/month/server.

About the server side programming, we are going to use a Java socket server which license may cost near 800$. Apart from this, our intention is to earn some money with this as we have worked a lot on it, and will work a lot too.

About the fee of 10$/year this is mostly to keep a track of accounts and remove them when its secure time has passed to not overload the server.

Anyway we haven't decided anything yet, and anything could happen ;). But let me make you a question...how much is 10$ in a year for a game that I'm sure you will love?

OK.
I'm gonna lay down the big question.
Since you 2 havn't come forward yet with any info, and no one asked, I'm gonna ask...
Do you have any experience in this field (I'm reffering to programming & flash)? How old are you two?

he is talking to maguas
but anyway why the argue? if it stays as 10$ per year who cares if the server costs 1$ or 1000$ :P

Not that big. Webmaster and I are partners studying at a university from Valencia. We study telecommunications engeneering (me on the electronics brand and him on the communications brand). Both of we have 23 years old. He has had lot of experience with server side languages and I've been learning flash for 2 years, developed some websites and now developing this project.

Also, I've always loved the graphic art and design, I haven't studied for that but I like it.

I don't know exactly what you meant when you said we hadn't come forward with any info yet. Do you mean about MWO development? If so I can tell you that I'm going to be adding new info periodically, new screenshots and so on. The game is quite advanced and we have thought about many of the hints we are going to find developing it. Programming structure is almost ready but we have to fill all the contents and add a bunch of artwork (many people are helping us on doing the cards ilustrations).

Hope that answers your question and let me tell you that any help or suggestions will be well received.

Well, some things have been said about it, let me give my opinion.

First of all, and sorry if I am lacking in modesty, the online version of Maganic Wars will be completely different from this temporary version of the game (just read the new features written in this Forum and in the section Media of the site). In fact, as we say in the homepage, this is a temporary site while we develop the actual game. The MWO will be the result of 1 year of work (plus the previous work on MW Final and MWO Get to the Top), with hundreds of hours spent between several people.

Secondly, many posts have been written about the server. Well, let's begin:
- Hosting multiuser secure communication with a centralized server to manage all those communication is not at all a trivial thing and consumes a lot of computational resources (since I know a simple PC couldn't host more than 100 or 200 users, maximum).
- MWO will have a size of sereral MB (MegaBytes). We expect to receive thousands of users per day (we exceeded 1 thousand user per day three days ago), so we will need a monthly transfer of some TB (Terabytes) (again, a simple PC is sure that cannot host it).
- For those two reasons, the choice of the server (or servers) is critical and somehow expensive.

Well, what I am trying to explain is that MWO is a serious project and that we think that it will be worth of the little price we want charge.
That's just my opinion, I hope I haven't bother anyone.

Regards.

Finally.
Some formal introduction. :)

I ment more details about you and you're partner.
You barely posted anything about yourselves until now.
Though, I noticed you've add more MWO stuff (even a screenshot!) which is also very welcomed. :)

Actually it does.
I didnt expect such a nice & detailed message. :)
Though I still have some more general questions - how did you come up with the idea of the game?
What is it a part of a University project (or maybe even still is?)
How did you came up with the name / concept?
How many people are involved?
How many hours were spent into it?
Do you still have enough time to work on it?

Yeah, I saw the screenshot (which was a great preview, by the way) and I've also read the new features list.

How many users do you expect?
Should you guys start with just 1 server?
Theoritcly, you should be able to open 100/200 connections.
The only thing that you should be worried about is the server's CPU, memory & bandwidth.
Assuming you have a "strong" PC, I dont see why it shouldn't work.
Take a simple chat server/client program, for example
This can prove that maintaining that much connection isn't a problem.
The only thing I'm not sure how much processing is supposed to be done by the server....

OK......
This kind of answers my previous question..... :)
If you expect thousands of users per day, then a simple PC won't be enough (i was thinking more hundreds...).

Maybe I just dont see how much big the project really is.....
I guess I'll just have to wait for more previews.....

like 1k / 3k people per day play maganic wars just to get in top...so imagine all these people + 70% of the card battle freaks + the ones that play the game and go away after a few weeks...
the result is like 20k / 30k...so i dont think a simple pc can handle it ( we r talking about a cheese load of people, maybe TBs per day will be consumed...)
